I graduated

But the weather was beautiful and I had waited four years to graduate from MIT, so I figured I could wait another 20 minutes or so. Inside Johnson, I was struck by how many people in the Class of 2014 didnt look familiar at all, as well as how much affection I felt for them all anyway. I pushed my way to the muffin baskets, which were against the wall and continually refilled by magic. I had been feeling nauseous all morning but forced two blueberry muffins down anyway. Most people took the swim test during freshman orientation, so maybe they wanted to make sure we could still swim. such were the text messages exchanged between myself and my friends while bored out of our minds in line. And then the line got moving again. We walked down dorm row as a class, across Mass Ave (I felt sorry for anyone trying to drive around MIT campus that morning), along Memorial Drive, and finally into Killian Court. The dome has never looked so grand to me. We filed into our seats. The commencement booklet had a leaflet that could be folded into a paper airplane (there were numbered dotted lines!) so we got busy. The ceremony started at around 10:20. There were a bunch of speeches (Rafael Reif was SO GREAT!) and Anika 14 (our class president) led us in flipping over our brass rat. Brass rats have the Boston skyline on one side and the MIT skyline on the other: undergrads wear it so that theyre looking out at the Boston skyline, and alumni wear it so that theyre looking back at the MIT skyline. As of that moment, I wear mine as an alumna. Then we started receiving our diplomas: School of Engineering first, School of Science nearly last. Each individuals name was read out loud, so I had a long time to wait. I cheered and screamed for friends, took a few bathroom breaks, visited my family in the audience. I counted how many names in the booklet I recognized: about 17% of the class. I was startled when my row was asked to stand up and get in line. This is it! someone in front of me said. The names in front of me were a blur, and then my name was called, and I walked passed professors in elaborate robes, waved at Prof. Bertschinger, accepted my diploma, shook President Reifs hand, walked off the stage and sat down again. Chris shouted my name and I looked over it was an enormous relief to see his familiar friendly face. He took a picture: After that, the afternoon became a blur of camera clicks and cheek exercises. I got my very dear friend Sophie (who also lived in French House!) to join us. We also got a picture with Prof. Peter Fisher, who taught me 8.022 and 8.033 and is now the head of the department: and, of course, I got a picture with Prof. Alan Guth, my academic advisor. In Prof. Guths Early Universe class (8.286, which I took sophomore fall) I met Eric, who became one of my best friends and J-Lab partner: And theres Sam, who I met during CPW as a prefrosh, before I had even decided to come to MIT. We met a party on the rooftop of Baker and for the rest of the night he supplied me with cough drops, a pool lesson, and conversation. Hes been one of my best friends ever since. For my research paper I chose to investigate the gender gap and how that effected the way that men and women may view other races. I believe that women, due to their struggles with gender bias, will be more compassionate and less racist than men. I chose the following four articles to look into gender bias and modern racism. My four chosen articles look into the United State’s racial and gender biases compared to those around the world. In Schnake, Beal, and Ruscher’s Modern Racism and Intergroup Boas in Casual Explanation the authors begin by asking the question: â€Å"Does intergroup bias explain the racism shown by European American towards African Americans?† The researchers wanted to see if their research supported their claim that†¦show more content†¦This study simulated typical situations in American’s lives today, and these reactions showed how the modern American is actually more racist than they believe. The next article I dove into was Wingfield’s The Modern Mammy and the Angry Black Man: African American Professionals’ Experiences with Gendered Racism in the Workplace. This article posed the question: â€Å"Is there a difference between the way black men and black women are treated in the workplace? Does race/gender have an effect on the treatment of an employee?† After the initial question the author theorizes that there is a greater gender gap between men and women when the woman is black than when the woman is white. To further study this topic, the author conducted in-depth interviews with 23 black professional workers and compared the way that racism affected the men vs the women. The author would ask questions about how they were treated by different genders and races of people in their workplace. Shockingly, the author found that even though these black men and women had at least a master’s degree in their field, their race put them on a lower lev el. The author found that both black men and black women face several obstacles, but specifically the men were purposely put in awkward situations and forced to diffuse all situations at work that involved other black employees. The Cure - Essay Example The two parents, Aileen, and John requested for an appointment with a doctor to examine the state of their two affected children. The diagnosis given to the children included Pompe for Megan while Patrick’s diagnosis was to come later in a few months. Pompe is a disease that is genetic in nature. It is due to unbroken glycogen that results from a deficiency in enzymes that breaks glycogen down. Sugar in the body builds up and is stored as glycogen. Glycogen is then deposited in the muscles of the body. The resultant effect is cells lacking energy and other necessities for them to function optimally. Consequently, the muscles will go through a lot of malnourishment. The effects of Pompe will cover the respiratory system and the muscles. A common phenomenon is children dying from a failure in the respiratory. The latter is also called cardiac arrest and occurs as the heart enlarges slowly. The lifespan of children diagnosed with Pompe is significantly reduced and only have a few years. The cause of Pompe is the mutations that the GAA gene undergoes. The task of GAA is the production of alpha Maltese. Alpha Maltese is an enzyme that handles the breakdown of glycogen into glucose that is usable by the body. The enzyme’s production will fail if GAA undergoes mutation. Glycogen, as a result, is not decomposed to form pure sugar. However, the cells in the body make use of glucose and cannot do so with glycogen. Too much glycogen in the cells will become toxic to the body. The more the build of glycogen, the weaker the muscles get and the levels of damage get worse. Pompe is fair when traced in an adult as compared to a child. Exercise For College Students College life is a time full of fun, friends, activities, classes, and homework. All of these activities however, add up to a busy life style. Being busy is not in itself harmful but when the busyness becomes so great that it turns into stress, problems start to arise. The formation of stress leads to many unhealthy trends, such as lack of sleep, loss of immunity to disease, and a change in personality traits. How then can stress in the busy lives of college students be reduced? The answer is a simple one that has long been known; exercise relieves stress. Colleges across the country need to implement a program of required exercise classes to promote the well being of students. In this paper I am going to use classical argument to support my claim of value, that classes involving exercise should be made a part of university requirements throughout the United States and specifically at Iowa State. I will do this by first stating a concession to those who do not believe exercise classes should be a part of the curriculum. Next, I will include a refutation section where my claims are supported against the opposing claims. Then, I will include the presentation of why universities need to require exercise classes. Last, I will conclude my paper by giving the solution to the problem of lack of exercise. One of the arguments against installing a program of required exercise classes is that in order to get the full health benefit from the program some of the responsibility would have to depend on the student and their attitudes. Presidential candidate

For an individual to run for presidency in the United States of America, there are some of the requirements that he/she has to meet. They include: the requirement of the individual to be a natural born citizen of the United States. The requirements for one to be considered a US citizen are scrutinized before he/she is allowed to contest for presidency. Immigrants no matter the period they have lived in the US can not be allowed to contest for presidency.Children who are born outside America by American parents are considered eligible to run for the presidential position but it is a requirement that they should have lived in the country (US) for a minimum of 14 years before they run for the office. This is so because of the need of the president to be familiar with general issues facing the population as a whole (Michael, 2009). Majority of people expect the candidate to be of good moral standing. Therefore the morals and ethics of the presidential aspirants are put under scrutiny par ticularly by the opponents.This could prove to be difficult for an individual whose character had been compromised in one way or the other during his/her earlier life. Other aspects that could give an individual a better opportunity of winning in elections is experiences that he/she has had. Many of citizens vote for individuals who have had an opportunity to serve the public in any capacity and have shown his outstanding leadership skills. This shows that the individual the candidate has the experience and the capacity to deal with related positions (Robert, 2006).All US presidents have been white males possibly because of the cultural believes and practices that did not provide a level playing ground to both male and female. Majority of the US population is comprised of whites and considering the racial discrimination against immigrants that existed, it could not be possible for an immigrant to run for presidency. The US constitution also prohibits immigrants from running for pres idency there fore the only people who were in a position of becoming presidents were male whites (Michael, 2009).Laws governing qualifications for presidency should be reviewed so that they can be able to provide a level playing ground to both male, female and immigrants who are legal Citizens of the US. A constitutional perfect presidential aspirant should posses the following qualities which could ensure that there is no division between democrats and the republicans or any other party: He/she should clean and blameless such that his history when traced should not be a questionable one.His/her record should be one that characterized by biasness based on tribe, gender, race color, creed or any other factor that can be considered discriminatory. He/she should be married for at least ten years. This will ensure that the individual has what it takes to handle matters involving pressure because if the individual is able to manage his family for that long despite numerous challenges ass ociated with family, then he can be able to handle pressure that can come about with his position as president.He should remain alert to guard the country against attack by enemies. He should be able to defend the country through actions. He should be an individual with the interests of each and every person in society at heart. He should not be easily manipulated by individuals or organizations (Robert, 2006). He should also be an individual with excellent behavior with good hospitality. Should be friendly, warm, humble, loving to other people and also kind. He should have the ability to learn and teach others either literally or through actions.He should not be using any drug whether legal or illegal as it may interfere with his judgment ability. He should not have characters that may bring out a negative impression about him such as walking out on people. Should be patient and without greed, without jealous or envy and he should be able to bring up a morally upright family. It sh ould also include the current requirements but the clause that locks out immigrants from running for presidency should be done away with.Sections like the one with the age limit of a candidate should also be retained because they will ensure that the individual has enough experience before he/she is entrusted to lead the country. Political experience should be a must because it will be through that experience that he will know how things are run in the government and make necessary amendments to poor policies. The type of work that the individual is involved in should not be a factor in determining the qualities because there have been successful presidents in the History of America who had humble jobs like Jimmy Carter who was a peasant (Robert, 2006).These qualities will help the candidate to effectively run the government because such a candidate will be able to win the confidence and support of the citizen aspects that are considered to be important for successful governance.
